Core Framework


The following sections will provide a theoretical background over which to introduce the novel meta-language experiment. The information presented in the framework draws from the topics of evolution, language, consciousness, interlinguistics, energy, and the meta-language. This last section serves as an introduction/ transition to the ongoing energylangauge experiment.

Each section begins with a basic description of the title and progresses into a more speculative application to this particular theory under development.


Evolution through natural selection is a dynamic process that involves change or variation gradually over time. Through adaptive or mutated feedback measures, the survival, growth, and perpetuation of an organism is based on its relative capacity to effectively interact with its environment. While the unit of selection depends on the particular system that is evolving, the descriptive mechanism of evolution as a variety-producing process is uncontroversial.

Evolution is also applicable to "inorganic" systems, such as technologies, languages, and cultures. Any informational unit that is capable of being passed on via a replicative process can provide the basis for evolutionary selection. However, there are key differences between the various types of evolution. The main distinction is drawn between passive and active modes.

Passive modes of evolution imply a gradual set of unmediated changes taking place without any particular goal or future outcome directing the change. Biological (genetic) evolution happens this way, with relative fitness being determined without any deliberate notion of progress involved. This passive mode is quite different than an active mode whereby alterations are engineered according to some anticipated outcome or future state. Technological or cultural (memetic) evolution happens in this way. There are fundamental differences in the rates, units of selection, and levels of sophistication implied in each of these modes of evolution. Passive evolution is more slower paced than active evolution, with less potential for novelty and variety due to the longer duration between generations and lack of directional feedback. It is crucial to realize that there are different modes of evolution reflecting different types of replicators, environments, and thresholds of self-awareness.


A language is a system of shared symbols that unites it's speakers in an communicative realm. There are a multitude of living language systems in existence throughout the world, all with a particular evolutionary history. The innate ability to master any language suggests the presence of a "hardwired" grammatical capacity. Added to this basic evolved aptitude are the specific ingredients of a given language as mandated by it's respective cultural setting.

A language is not a simple system of "mapping out" a discrete objective reality but rather a system that "creates" a reality model based on the environmental conditions in which it arises. This implies a generative property of language where each particular environmental niche provides a body of information which maybe be used to interact with the reality model. A language user can be seen to exist in cohesive dialogue with not only his or her cultural peers but with the surrounding environment as well.

In this project, language is treated as an abstract living tool. It is abstract in that it links ideas, referents, and words in an indirect way. There is no direct pairing of words to the things they refer to, so the abstraction of language is used as an interface. Language is living in the sense that it has an infinite generative potential to serve as an organic component to it's speaking community. A language can go extinct along with it's speaking community, or can also be revived as in the case of a cultural rebirth. As a tool it is subject to passive change or active reconfiguration resulting from pressures such as convention, utility, imperfection, or facility of use.


Human beings possess a seemingly unique mental faculty called consciousness. This involves a collective ability to reflect on our surroundings as well as refer to ourselves as a distinct part of the environmental realm. Consciousness is the result of an increasingly complex self-awareness process and involves a speculative meditation within one's own mind. Language allows us to share the nature of these contemplations in an externalized informational realm.

Language and consciousness can be imagined as symbiotic partners that interact within the broader context of culture. This relationship is not one of "cause and effect" but one of "autocatalytic reciprocation". This is to say that while language does not control consciousness, (or vice versa), the development or retardation of one is related symbiotically to that of the other. Given their intimate relationship in our human evolutionary history, it is impossible to imagine one without the other.

If thought and speech are the result of a distinct reciprocal evolution, they have reached their contemporary sophistication from much simpler origins. We can also assume that our current level of complexity is but a temporary station on an evolutionary journey into the future. This project should be considered an experimental apparatus whereby a novel culture is progressively engineered as we investigate, evaluate, and modify our thought and language systems according to a new paradigm.


This field has to do with the study, creation, and implementation of new language systems. There are a number of motivating factors behind the various sub-disciplines of this field. New languages can be created and studied for reasons of utility, philosophy, entertainment, secrecy, or boredom. Adherents of this field include hobbyists, academics, authors, scientists, lunatics, mystics, and dreamers, (Of course it is possible to be any number of these at once.) It is several hundreds of years old and has attracted the attention of thousands of minds as diverse as the languages themselves.

Whatever reason one might have for constructing a new language system, considerations such as future application, expected audience, and anticipated scope come into play. A creator of a new language is reasonably expected to provide at least an introduction to the presuppositions and expectations that lead to the new system. This should serve to shed light on what context the creator is coming from and what can be expected from the system. They can also serve as an intellectual index of inquiry, an indicator of curiosity, or a forum for the sharing of insight.

This program seeks to develop and evaluate the prospects for a novel language system, a communication theory and the creation of a meta-culture.


As a basic set of forces that course throughout the universe, energy is a truly fundamental common medium. Transformations between the states of matter and energy result in the changes that animate the known universe. Though our scientific knowledge of these forces is far from complete (they have yet to be unified into a grand theory), people generally have a fairly coherent "folk understanding" of how things work. We can predict with a fair degree of precision the dynamics of energy and matter. At the subatomic and astronomic levels however, these behaviors become far less predictable and quite counterintuitive.

However, the fact that something is "unknown", does not necessarily mean that it is "unknowable". It is possible that our conceptual models and our cognitive powers are inadequate to render comprehensible the complete workings of the cosmos. Another possibility is that we haven't yet evolved to a sufficient threshold of consciousness to fully understand the universe. Whatever the case, the universe is not reluctant to render its secrets to us. It is our inability or unwillingness to clearly interact with it that holds us back from a more complete understanding.

If we look at any organism, system, structure, or process, we perceive energy at work. Indeed any living specimen exists in constant interaction with the matter and energies of its environment. Everything needed for the survival, growth, and perpetuation of an organic system is inherent in its surroundings. The ability, (instinctual, learned or both) to make efficient use of one's principle environmental complex is the basis for that organism's effectiveness to evolve. It seems to follow that there is an "energetic fluency" that is related to the interactor's evolution.
